  • Make constructive conflict work to your centre’s advantage
  • Successfully manage destructive conflict when it does arise

Mathematics: Developing collaboration - Using discourse and problem solving to develop mathematical understanding - Sue Pine

Thursday 30th June 2022 | Delivered online (via Zoom) | Register here
About this workshop:

Groupwork is an effective instructional strategy for achieving intellectual and social learning goals and is a superior approach for conceptual learning, for creative problem solving, and for developing academic language proficiency. However, the reality of students working in small groups tend to develop inequalities where some members are more active and influential than others. The workshop will focus on strategies to support effective group work where all students' ideas and contributions are valued.

About our facilitator – Sue Pine (MoE accredited facilitator)

Sue has been working in professional learning and development since 2014. She specialises in mathematics and statistics, teaching as inquiry, data analysis and programme delivery. Schools value Sue’s relationship based approach and collaborative co-construction of designing the PLD based on relevant New Zealand and international research. She is skilled at designing, delivering and evaluating professional learning and development, in collaboration with school leaders and teachers.

As an experienced and passionate leader in education, Sue draws on her expertise and experience within the teaching profession, in which she has held a variety of roles. Her career has spanned over 25 years and includes ten years as an assistant principal in New Zealand and principal of a small international school in Indonesia. She has held leadership responsibilities in literacy, mathematics, assessment and special educational needs. Her expertise as a school leader and literacy leader enables her to make strong links to both mathematics and literacy.

EP provides short, practical courses to assist relievers in their classroom practice, which require limited resources but are purposeful, fun and of educational benefit. Great value for money.

PD workshop attendee

Such a fun and enjoyable morning! It gave me lots of ideas to use in the classroom. The course leader was really experienced and had a realistic understanding of the challenges of a day in the classroom.

Primary teacher, Wellington (PD workshop attendee)

The Maths workshop run by Julie Roberts was wonderful. In two hours we learnt (and played!) many great games and activities for use in the classroom. All of the activities can be differentiated for different age groups and abilities and require minimal materials which made them extremely practical. I will definitely be attending more workshops like this one.

Primary teacher, Wellington (PD workshop attendee)

I found the simplicity of the activities and the integration of science, technology and maths particularly useful. Ben prompted and encouraged responses of rich vocabulary. His enthusiasm was very motivating considering science is not my strength! I also appreciated his commitment to tikanga Māori.

PD workshop attendee

As always, Julie's passion for mathematics shone through and she motivated and inspired me to want to take it back and try it in the classroom.

Primary teacher, Wellington (PD workshop attendee)

Phillippa facilitated a meeting of minds. I enjoyed the informal setting as it allowed for small group and whole group discussions without fear of judgement. These discussions helped critique strategies and activities and improvements and variations were suggested for practical purposes. It was awesome!
